Frequently asked questions

How much does private surgery cost in Canada?
Costs vary widely by procedure, but generally fall in the range of $5,000-$30,000.

For a more detailed breakdown of costs by surgery type, click here.
Is there a private surgeon near me?
Private surgery is tightly regulated and options can be vary by province. As a result, many patients will need to travel out-of-province to pay privately for surgery.

For more information, please see our breakdown on how private surgery works in Canada.
What kinds of surgery am I able to get privately in Canada?
We help Canadians access elective procedures with the some of the longest wait times including orthopedics (hip replacements, knee replacements and repair, arthroscopy) and spinal surgery.

You can also search for specialists in urology, gynecology, ENT, bariatric, and plastic surgery.
Do I need a referral?
No referral necessary, which is great for Canadians who do not have a primary care provider.

Just search, compare and connect.
Do I need to travel for private surgery in Canada?
It depends. While provincial regulations vary, Canadians generally need to travel out-of-province to pay privately for surgeries covered by their home provinces. Surgency lets you compare options in different provinces based on your travel preferences.
Can you claim private surgery on taxes?
Yes, but it depends on what the surgery is, where it was done, and how you paid. In Canada, you can generally claim eligible out-of-pocket medical expenses (including many private surgery costs) for the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC), and most provinces/territories have a parallel credit.

Please consult a tax professional before claiming any private surgery on your taxes.
Where am I eligible to get private surgery within Canada?
You must travel out-of-province to pay for private surgical procedures.
